Postgraduate Programme “LL.M. in International Studies”
The Postgraduate Programme “LL.M. in International Studies” which is provided by the Law Department of the Law Faculty of Democritus University of Thrace, was created to cover in a unique way special issues which are relevant to a) Human Rights Protection and Humanitarian Law and b) Private International Law, International Transactions and International Arbitration. The above scientific subjects have acquired growing significance during the last years. However, their autonomous and combined teaching is not an option at the undergraduate level and for this reason it was deemed important to create this postgraduate programme.
The Law Department of the Law School of Democritus University of Thrace specializes traditionally in International Studies and has acquired the necessary credibility, from the organization, for almost twenty years, of postgraduate programmes which correspond to current academic challenges.
The Sector of International Studies is staffed by valued and internationally recognized academic staff, with a rich oeuvre in the academic subjects of the LL.M., operates two research laboratories, while it was awarded the Jean Monnet Chair by the European Commission and supports the participation of student groups in international competitions in which they have gained outstanding awards.
Object, Purpose and Learning Outcomes
The Postgraduate Programme (LL.M.) of the Law School aims at promoting scientific knowledge specializing in International Studies. Moreover, it aims to develop scientific research in the field of Public International Law and Private International Law, taking into account the developmental needs of the state. To acquire the Masters Diploma one needs to successfully complete two studying semesters, as well as to write a master thesis.
Preparing and writing a master thesis aims at the scientific deepening of postgraduate students in areas of special scientific interest.
In the “Public International Law” specialization students will be able to enrich their knowledge on issues regarding new approaches and current developments in humanitarian law and the international protection of human rights regime. Also, students become familiar with legal definitions.
In the “Private International Law” specialization students will become familiar with various topics related to European Private International Law, as well as the Law of Transactions and Arbitration. For successful completion of the postgraduate programme, students have to delve into many aspects of private international law.
Upon completion of their studies, postgraduate students will be able to:
