Course Content

The international humanitarian law of armed conflict (IHL) deals with the legal framework that regulates the conduct of hostilities and the treatment of individuals in the course of an international or non-international armed conflict. The content of International Humanitarian Law of Armed Conflict I is: (1) The Sources, Scope and Evolution of IHL, (2) The Relationship between IHL and the Use of Force between States and IHL and Human Rights Law, (3) Combatants and Non-Combatants, (4) The Protection of Persons (injured, sick, shipwrecked, prisoners of war, civilians), (5) Non-International Armed Conflict. 

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able:

  • to comprehend the foundational legal context of international humanitarian law
  • to comprehend how the Four Geneva Conventions and their 2 Additional Protocols function
  • to familiarize with the core principles of international humanitarian law (principle of humanism, principle of distinction)
  • to understand the relation between international humanitarian law and the law of the use of force
  • to fully understand the sources and development of international humanitarian law
  • to understand the difference between an IAC and a NIAC
  • to come across historical incidents and examples which help understand the difference between a combatant and a non-combatant
  • to fully comprehend and critically assess how current development affect the way international humanitarian law is applied.
